The NODAC Program

No One Dies Alone Companion (NODAC) Program

Amana Living is dedicated to holistic care for all our residents, including providing emotional and spiritual support approaching the end of life.

Some residents don’t have families or friends who can be with them in their final moments. This may be due to estrangement, family living overseas, parents outliving their children, situations where family support is limited, or other commitments. We are actively seeking applications for new volunteers to provide comfort and support to a person at the end of their life.

Having been embraced by Amana Living residents at Lady McCusker Home and their families, the NODAC program is being rolled out across all 13 Amana Living residential care centres from July 2021.

Origins

Modelled on the No One Dies Alone program founded at the Sacred Heart Medical Centre in Oregon, USA, our NODAC volunteers provide companionship, comfort and support to a person as they near the end of their life.

The No One Dies Alone Companion (NODAC) Program helps to ensure our residents have the companionship of another person at the end of their lives. The NODAC Program arranges for carefully selected, trained and supported volunteers to be with residents in the final stage of life. This means being with the resident, usually for a three-hour period, providing companionship and presence at the end of their life.

Since August 2020 Amana Living has been conducting a pilot NODAC Program at Lady McCusker Home in Duncraig.

NODAC volunteers provide vital companionship, comfort and support to a person in their final moments. Volunteers read and talk to the residents, gently hold their hand, or play their favourite music.

A NODAC volunteer experience

An experience from the heart

“It is such a privilege to be a NODAC volunteer; the role is worthwhile, and you get so much in return. It can be challenging but ultimately it’s about spending time with a person, talking to them, and enriching their life.”

Renee, one of our founding NODAC volunteers.
