Gaye Clayton and Steve Kitchen were total strangers until three years ago when they moved into Amana Living Meadow Springs Village within one week of each other. Now they’re firm friends, a bond that was cemented by an unfortunate accident about a year ago.

Steve explains, “Gaye fell over and broke her wrist but her family wasn't available to take her to the hospital so I took her to Peel Health Campus and also specialist appointments in Rockingham.”

The pair were neighbourly and would often say hello to each other but it was this act of kindness that saw the friendship blossom and now Steve pops in to check on Gaye regularly.

While you can see Gaye and Steve’s similarities in their joking and gentle ribbing of one another, their journey to Meadow Springs was quite different.

Gaye had been living close-by when her husband passed away and she found their home was getting too big.  While Steve had been exploring his options for around 10 years while he had a window cleaning business in Perth, and decided to move away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

“The village location is perfect and it’s just like being on holiday," says Steve. “It’s close to the beaches, shops, bus routes, and golf course. No other retirement village offered the same benefits. It was also the right size, small enough so you could get to know everyone and be able to call on people if you need help.”

Gaye says “I’m very happy here. It’s peaceful and you can choose to take part in all the activities or stay home. I’d encourage anyone thinking of moving into a retirement village to do it as early as possible. I wish I’d done it sooner.”

Steve agrees, “I go on cruises several times a year, often with friends from the village, and it’s great that I can just lock-up and leave my apartment. I also have the added security of the village manager being here to handle anything in my absence.”

If you want to join the Amana Living Meadow Springs Village and meet people like Gaye and Steve, come along to the Village Open Day on 9 June, 11am-2pm.  There will be tours of the village, inspections of the available villas and apartments, plus food and entertainment.
