Introduction

When someone comes to Amana Living, they have already enjoyed long and rich lives, and have their own unique needs and preferences.

We understand this, and we know that people living with dementia are often unable to communicate their concerns clearly.

With the help of family, complementing our own observations, we work out what each person’s individual social, spiritual and emotional needs are, so that we can take a holistic approach to their care.

Helping people with dementia to remain as independent as they want to be is a vital part of what we do. This means drawing on their strengths and abilities to devise structured activities, and paying attention to their environment, such as signage, lighting, prompts and cues. We also provide support to family members and other informal carers, who are often highly stressed and coping alone in supporting the person living with dementia at home.

Staff training is a priority, and fundamental to excellence in dementia care. Our specialist dementia team draw on international best practice in guiding our staff and enhancing the care environment. Amana Living dementia specialists are regularly invited to contribute journal articles at a national level, and our McCusker Nurse Service has won two major industry awards, placing our team among leaders in dementia care.
