Volunteer
I came to live at Amana Living – Moline Village in 1989, its great here, I love the freedom I have to live life as I wish, which is why I first decided to become a volunteer. I wanted to offer the residents more to their own lives, there are quite a few of us at Moline who volunteer together for the same reasons.
I first became a volunteer about 16 years ago just helping out and then it sought of grew from there. Now I help out in the shop by doing stock orders, I work in the gardens with the residents and I do lots of odd jobs like opening and shutting the chapel each day. I used to help serve meals to about 50 people as part of a social function within the residence but prefer working in the shop and garden, so no-one minded when I gave that up.
About two years ago I won a Bethany medallion for volunteering, I got quite a big write up in the paper. It was quite a surprise from the staff here, they are all very nice, you couldn’t fault them, they are all so obliging and helpful.
I would recommend volunteering to anyone, it’s very rewarding and there is so much to do, it would suit just about anyone. It’s also nice that Amana Living recognises you. Apart from giving awards, every year they thank us by putting on a special function
