Our Anglican essence

Amana Living is proud to be an Anglican aged care organisation.  Our mission or purpose is to ‘excel in providing Christian care and services in WA to people living the second half of life’.

At the same time, we hold dear the value of inclusiveness.  We exist to serve people from all walks of life.

First and foremost, we aim to provide the most relevant range of services to older people and the best available care anywhere in Australia.

Amana Living is a ‘not for profit’ organisation.  We are part of the church and charitable sector.  This means that we do not have ‘owners’ of the business who make a profit from our activities.  We aim to make surpluses to re-invest in services and care for our residents and clients.

We provide services to older people, regardless of their religious belief, race or colour.  We are an equal opportunity employer and we have employees from a multitude of national, religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In reality, we share our aspiration for excellent care, our universal approach and our ‘not for profit’ status with many other aged care providers.  We just think and hope we do things that much better!

What sets us apart as an Anglican aged care provider is not so much whom we serve and what we provide, but rather how we provide care and services and why we do it.

The ‘why’ is probably the most important part.  Amana Living, as part of the Anglican Diocese of Perth, exists to meet need and alleviate suffering in the name of the Anglican Church and in keeping with the teachings of Jesus.

Our reason for being lies in God’s compassionate calling that is found in the Holy Scriptures.  The founders of Amana Living were guided by faith to love all people and through the experience of that love to bring them closer to God.

The teachings of Christ to love all people explain why Amana Living does not restrict its services to Anglicans.  The Anglican Christian tradition is one of inclusiveness.

It is the Anglican way to reach out to all people in the hope that they may find God through the work and contribution of the Anglican Church.

While we seek to achieve excellence and best practice standards in our care and services, we consciously try to do this in a way that is in keeping with Christian values and the Anglican tradition.

Good examples of this would be our person-centred approach and our participative organisational culture.  We believe strongly in the value and contribution of each person.  We seek to treat each of our residents and clients as an individual worthy of special attention.  Similarly, we believe each of our staff members has a valuable role to play and we seek out and welcome their opinions and contributions.

Other symbols of our Anglican identity are the religious services we hold and the chapels and sacred spaces that are created at all of our centres.

In summary, Amana Living shares much in common with other aged care organisations but has a special character derived from its Anglican values and its commitment to pursue excellence.

Expectations of Staff at Amana Living:

  • Commit yourself to the care and well-being of our residents and clients.
  • Be an active, positive participant in the life of the organisation.
  • Familiarise yourself with Anglican values and traditions.
  • Be proud of our Anglican roots.
  • Create opportunities for staff residents and families to ‘taste’ the Anglican faith, but never ever put pressure on people to do so.
  • Respect and cherish the diversity of our organisation and build bridges with people of good values from all backgrounds and creeds.
  • Support the symbols of Anglicanism within the organisation – the services, the chapels, the icons and the sacred places.
Learn and remember Archbishop Roger Herft’s brilliant and inclusive summary of the Anglican way – ‘all are welcome, all may taste, none will be refused’
